GENERAL INFORMATION SB 1383

By 2025, California will be required to reduce the amount of organic material disposed in landfills by 75%. By 2025, no less than 20% of edible food currently disposed in California must also be recovered for human consumption. Every business and resident in Fresno County needs to separate organics starting in 2022. Having a green container* for organics is mandatory except for limited exceptions. These web pages will provide information and resources to navigate these new requirements. Contact your hauler to find out more.

RESIDENTIAL

Beginning in 2022, California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) will require Fresno County and all California counties to provide residents with a green container for the collection of their source-separated organic waste.

Residents will now have a three-container collection system. Residents will continue recycling non-organic material in their blue container and separate out their organic waste (food scraps and yard trimmings) by placing it in the green container. All other trash will be disposed of in the gray cart. This is a big change for all of us and will require our commitment.

BUSINESS

Businesses are required to subscribe to organic waste (now to include food waste) recycling and garbage collection service through Fresno County's approved hauler list or self-haul their organic waste to a specified composting facility.

Non-local entities and local education agencies are also required to subscribe to organic waste collection service or self-haul their organic waste, and are subject to the same requirements as commercial businesses.

COMMERCIAL EDIBLE FOOD GENERATORS

SB 1383 requires certain food businesses to donate the maximum amount of edible food they would otherwise dispose of in a landfill, to food recovery organizations. To determine if you are a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Commercial Edible Food Generator business, call (559) 600-4259 or click below.

MULTI-UNIT PROPERTY OWNERS/MANAGERS

Most multi-family residents and commercial multi-tenant complexes don’t have individual trash, recycling and yard waste containers for each unit. Instead, containers are located in a central area on the property.

Property owners or management companies, that are the billing party for shared waste service at their property, are required to provide trash, recycling and organics (green container*) containers at your property.
