RISKS OF IMPROPER DISPOSAL
Improper disposal of HHW poses serious risks: Many household hazardous products contain substances that can ignite, corrode, or contaminate.
When not disposed of correctly, these materials can:
- Pose fire hazards: Items like batteries and certain chemicals can ignite, causing dangerous fires at waste management facilities.
- Harm the environment: Toxic substances can leak into soil and water, leading to pollution and health risks.
- Endanger health: Exposure to hazardous chemicals can lead to serious health problems for both humans and wildlife.
In 2020 alone, waste management facilities in the U.S. and Canada reported 2,620 fires related to hazardous waste, like batteries. (1) Proper disposal helps prevent these dangers, recover valuable materials, and reduce environmental impact.
