BUSINESS
The State of California now requires that businesses participate in organic waste recycling, which now includes food waste. Businesses in Fresno County can do this by subscribing to collection service through an approved solid waste hauler, or by self hauling to a designated composting facility. Non-local entities and local education agencies must also follow these rules and guidelines, as must commercial businesses.
Provide employees and customers with organics and recycling containers next to all trash containers.
State law also requires that Businesses provide employees, customers, tenants, and contractors/vendors with organics and recycling containers next to all trash containers.
Ensure containers are accessible, appropriately sized, and correctly labeled or colored:
- Green for organics
- Blue for recycling
- Gray for trash
Properly dispose of food waste in green bins, not in grey bins.
Educate employees and customers on how to properly sort food waste into the correct bins.
Regularly check for contamination in organic waste containers.
TRAINING & EDUCATION
To reduce food waste in our landfills, please provide training to all of your employees and as much education for customers as possible regarding how to properly sort food waste. Here are a few resources available to download and print:

COMMERCIAL EDIBLE FOOD GENERATORS
If your business generates edible food, you may fall under the category of a Commercial Edible Food Generator, subject to specific regulations aimed at reducing food waste and supporting food recovery efforts. The State of California requires certain businesses to donate surplus edible food to food recovery organizations rather than disposing of it as waste. This initiative is designed to combat food insecurity while minimizing the environmental impact of food waste.
EXEMPTIONS
Certain areas of Fresno County may be exempt from SB 1383 organics regulations. For more information, please check with your solid waste hauler or the Fresno County Resources Division at (559) 600-4259 or email recycling@fresnocountyca.gov.
